3 June 1957

Stopped at Mrs. Watson’s to pick up the Wall St. Journals. Edwin came in. He fell off a ladder, hurt his back, and almost broke his arm yesterday. Also, someone stole his wallet at Five Points – drunk again, I presume.

He said: “I’m sure living having a run of bad luck.”

I said: “Doesn’t the saying go ‘luck is what you make of it’?”

Mrs. Watson said: “Luck may be what you make of it, but how you take it is what counts.”

… Interesting…

This attitude does not put an unnecessary burden upon the individual.
